#15 Wayne State 6 Winona State 3
The #15 Wayne State College baseball team opened the 2008 Northern Sun Conference Baseball Tournament Thursday afternoon with a 6-3 win over Winona State in a game played at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex in Wayne. The Wildcats move to 39-10 on the season with the win while dropping the defending NSIC Tournament champion Warriors to 21-20 overall.
Winona State opened the scoring in the top of the first inning when Mike Wendland doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by John Magee, giving the Warriors a 1-0 advantage. The Wildcats took the lead for good in the bottom of the third inning when Justin Hemauer was hit by the pitch and scored on Marc Manganaro’s two-run homer to left field, his 10th home run of the season to put WSC in front 2-1.
The Wildcats then struck for four runs in the fifth inning to grab a 6-1 lead. Sean Soderberg’s bases-loaded double was the big hit in the inning, scoring three runs, while Nick Bidroski chipped in with an RBI single to score Soderberg with the final Wildcat run.
Winona State scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to make the score 6-3. Mike Brabender’s RBI groundout in the sixth inning scored Ronnie Olson, who singled to open the inning. The Warriors’ run in the seventh inning was Sam Henriksen leading off with a double and scoring on Jared Andersen’s single to make the final score 6-3.
Wayne State had 12 hits in the game to eight for Winona State. Manganaro finished 3 for 4 with his two-run homer to go with two RBI’s and two runs scored. Bidroski finished 3 for 3 with a pair of doubles and a single while Soderberg added a three-run double to highlight Wayne State’s 12-hit attack.
For Winona State, Ronnie Olson had two hits while Henriksen and Wendland each doubled.
Mitch Herrick (8-1) earned the pitching win for Wayne State, working seven strong innings. He allowed three runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Reliever Chad Moreland pitched the final two innings without allowing a hit while striking out two to shut the door on Winona State.
Wayne State will play Southwest Minnesota State on Friday at 1:00 p.m. in the NSIC Baseball Tournament at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex in Wayne.
