Game 1: Wayne State 2 South Dakota 1

Game 2: Wayne State 3 South Dakota 0

The Wayne State College softball team won two games over South Dakota on Tuesday afternoon in Wayne.  WSC won game one by the score of 2-1 and took game two by the score of 3-0.  Wayne State moved to 21-16 with the wins while South Dakota fell to 12-18 with the losses.

In game one, South Dakota took a 1-0 lead in the third inning.  The score stayed the same until the bottom of the fifth inning when Wayne State's Jennifer Radley smacked a two-run single up the middle to give the 'Cats a 2-1 lead.  After a quiet sixth inning, South Dakota led off the seventh inning with a lead-off double.  However, Wayne State pitcher Katie Goetzinger retired the next three batters in order, and WSC held on for the 2-1 win.

Offensively for Wayne State in game one, Jennifer Radley went 1 for 1 with two RBI's.  Amy Sandstrom went 2 for 3 and scored a run.  Blaire Kuhl, Hannah Engelkamp and Katie Goetzinger also had hits for Wayne State in game one.  Katie Goetzinger (15-8) went the distance on the mound for WSC giving up one run on six hits with no walks and six strikeouts on the day.

In game two, Wayne State once again used solid pitching and timely hitting to earn the 3-0 win.  WSC took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on an RBI single by Valerie Robinson.  The 'Cats added to their lead in the fourth inning on an RBI single off the bat of Amy Sandstrom and added an insurance run in the fifth inning on a leadoff homer by Jennifer Radley which made the score 3-0.  It was Radley's 10th home run of the season which is a Wayne State single season record.  She was tied with Shelle Tomaszkiewicz who hit nine homers back in the 1986 season.  Radley's fifth inning home run also gives Wayne State 30 home runs as a team on the season which breaks the previous record of 29 that was set last season.

Jennifer Radley went 2 for 2 with an RBI and a run scored to lead the Wayne State offense in game two.  Amy Sandstrom and Valerie Robinson also added RBI's for the 'Cats.  Sam Earleywine, Blaire Kuhl, Hannah Engelkamp and Katie Goetzinger all added one hit apiece for WSC.  Kiley Peterson earned the win on the mound for WSC and is now 5-4 on the season.  Peterson gave up no runs and four hits with one walk and five strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings pitched.

Wayne State will travel to take on Southwest Minnesota State in a doubleheader tomorrow before returning home on Thursday to host the University of Nebraska-Kearney in a doubleheader starting at 2 at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex here in Wayne.
