Jennifer Hefner had a match-high 18 kills while hitting .469 to power the 18th-ranked Wayne State College volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep at Upper Iowa Saturday afternoon in Northern Sun Conference volleyball played in Fayette, Iowa. The Wildcats are now 21-4 overall and 9-2 in the NSIC while Upper Iowa falls to 12-13 overall and 3-8 in league play.
WSC took control of the match early, taking a 9-2 lead in the first set en route to a 25-16 win as the 'Cats had 18 kills in the first set. The second set was much the same as WSC roared out to an 8-0 lead and hit .459 with 19 kills and just two hitting errors to post a 25-14 win. The third set was a little closer, but WSC recorded a 25-20 win to complete the NSIC road sweep over the Peacocks.
Hefner, a junior middle hitter from Archer, Nebraska (Central City HS), had 18 kills with just three hitting errors and hit .469 in the match to pace Wayne State offensively. Sophomore Tali Fredrickson added 11 kills and had 11 digs while Tessa Wietfeld and Leigh Connot also were credited with 11 digs for WSC. Setter Diedra Artz handed out 45 set assists in the win.
The Wildcats will be at home next weekend for a pair of big Northern Sun Conference home matches, hosting 10th-ranked Minnesota State Friday night at 7:00 p.m. and 15th-ranked Southwest Minnesota State Saturday afternoon at 5:00 p.m.
