Fredrickson's big match lifts #14 Wayne State in 3-1 win over Bemidji State

           Tali Fredrickson notched 14 kills to go with 24 digs to lead the 14th-ranked Wayne State College volleyball to a 3-1 NSIC volleyball win over Bemidji State Saturday night in Wayne.  After Bemidji State won the first set 25-22, Wayne State rallied to win the next three sets 25-23, 25-21 and 25-16 to take the match 3-1.  WSC is now 26-6 overall and 14-3 in league play while Bemidji State slips to 10-19 overall and 7-11 in the NSIC.

            Bemidji State came out on fire, hitting .318 in the first set with 18 kills to top the ‘Cats 25-22.  Both teams struggled hitting in the second set as WSC took advantage of 11 BSU errors for a 25-23 win.  The Wildcats led nearly start to finish in taking the third set 25-21.  In the fourth set with the score tied at 14-14, Tali Fredrickson got a hot hand serving and scored 10 straight points to give the Wildcats the momentum and the 25-16 win to win the match.

            Fredrickson led WSC in hitting with her 14 kills along with 24 digs while Jennifer Hefner also had 14 kills with eight blocks. Mindy Moody also reached double figures in kills with 10 as WSC hit .168 for the match.  Leigh Connot contributed 22 digs in the Wildcat win followed by Nicole Brungardt with 15.  Setter Diedra Artz had 46 set assists to go with 13 digs.

            For Bemidji State, Laura Slinger, Nicole Olson and Courtney Bitter had 10 kills apiece.  Bitter also had 42 set assists and 16 digs for the Beavers.

            Wayne State will be host Augustana College in the final home match of the season Tuesday evening on White Out Night at Rice Auditorium starting at 7:00 p.m.   The WSC SPORTS Club is hosting the annual event that encourages fans to wear white and cheer on the Wildcats while trying to establish a new single attendance mark for WSC volleyball.

Coach Disch's comments: Travis is in his third year with our program.  He started his career at Wayne State as a freshman and redshirted.  Then he went to New Mexico Junior College for two years and returned to the Wildcats for his last two seasons.  He is a sure gloved first baseman that earned All-NSIC Gold Glove honors last spring.  Not only does he do well on the baseball field, he also has above a 3.0 grade point average in the classroom.  He will hit in the middle of our order and continue to lead by example.

What makes you the person you are today? Everything I have been through, good or bad, in my life has taught me all that I know.  My mom and grandmother have taught me as well.
Coach Unger's comments: Kristen has been a very vocal leader for our squad.  She is a strong athlete and her work ethic is second to none.  Kristen is a very versatile player, but her main priorities will be to hold down first base or spark our offense as the designated player.
