The Wayne State College baseball team earned two wins over Bemidji State to open conference play on Saturday afternoon in Wayne.  Scores of the games were 8-1 and 9-4.  Wayne State has won six straight games and is 10-5 on the year and 2-0 in the NSIC.  Bemidji State dropped to 7-13 on the year and 0-2 in the NSIC with the losses. 

            Wayne State jumped out to an early lead in game one.  The ‘Cats used three hits and a Bemidji State error to plate three runs in the bottom of the first inning.  Mike Bisenius and John Plasha each had RBI’s in the first for WSC.  Wayne State added two more runs in the second inning to take a 5-0 lead.  Justin Hemauer’s RBI double highlighted the second inning for WSC.  Wayne State added two more runs in the fourth inning to take a 7-0 lead.  Josh Yost had an RBI single, and Hemauer scored on a wild pitch for the ‘Cats.  WSC then added an unearned run in the fifth inning to increase the lead to 8-0.  Bemidji State scored a single run in the top of the seventh to make the final score 8-1. 

            Wayne State had nine hits in the game compared to just three for Bemidji State.  The Beavers had four errors in the game to just one for WSC.  Wayne State was led by Justin Hemauer, who went 3 for 4 on the day with one RBI and three runs scored.  Josh Yost, Joe Wendte, Alex Koch, Mike Bisenius, John Plasha and Brandon Polk also had hits for the ‘Cats in game one.  Chad Moreland earned the win on the mound for WSC and is 1-2 on the young season.  Moreland pitched all seven innings, allowing just one run on three hits with no walks and five strikeouts.  Josh Juntinen went 2 for 3 in game one for Bemidji State.  Justin Huether (0-2) took the loss for BSU after allowing seven runs on seven hits with one strikeout in four innings of work for the Beavers.

            In game two, Wayne State again jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the first inning.  Alex Koch had an RBI single and Darren Kamp had a two-run single for WSC in the first.  BSU bounced back with three runs of their own in the top of the second inning, highlighted by a two-run homer by Alex Messick.  Wayne State reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the third inning when Kamp scored an unearned run to give WSC the 4-3 lead.  Bemidji State tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the fourth inning with an RBI double by Ryan Johnson.  Wayne State took control of the game with three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Joe Wendte had an RBI double for WSC followed by a two-run homer to left center by Alex Koch.  WSC added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth on RBI singles by Derek Eversole and Josh Yost to make the final score 9-4. 

            Wayne State had nine hits in game two compared to seven for Bemidji State, and both teams had one error.  Josh Yost and Alex Koch each had three hits to lead WSC.  Yost went 3 for 3 with one RBI and one run scored while Koch went 3 for 4 with three RBI’s and two runs scored.  Darren Kamp added a hit and two RBI’s for the ‘Cats.  Austen Wisroth (2-1) earned the win on the mound for WSC, allowing four runs on seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts on the day.  Jared Hegdahl pitched the final two innings for WSC, allowing no runs and no hits with four strikeouts.  Alex Messick went 1 for 2 with two RBI’s and one run scored to lead BSU in the loss.  Josh Juntunen (0-2) took the loss on the mound for BSU, allowing seven runs on six hits with four walks and three strikeouts in the game.    

            The two teams are scheduled to play another doubleheader at noon Sunday to close out the four-game series at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex in Wayne.

Coach Disch's comments: Travis is in his third year with our program.  He started his career at Wayne State as a freshman and redshirted.  Then he went to New Mexico Junior College for two years and returned to the Wildcats for his last two seasons.  He is a sure gloved first baseman that earned All-NSIC Gold Glove honors last spring.  Not only does he do well on the baseball field, he also has above a 3.0 grade point average in the classroom.  He will hit in the middle of our order and continue to lead by example.

Coach Unger's comments: Kristen has been a very vocal leader for our squad.  She is a strong athlete and her work ethic is second to none.  Kristen is a very versatile player, but her main priorities will be to hold down first base or spark our offense as the designated player.
