The Wayne State College baseball team earned 5-1 and 5-3 wins over Bemidji State on Sunday afternoon in Wayne to complete a four-game sweep of the Beavers.  Wayne State has now won eight straight games and is 12-5 overall and 4-0 in the NSIC with the wins.  Bemidji State is 7-15 on the year and 0-4 in the NSIC after the losses. 

            In game one, Wayne State jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when John Plasha scored on a wild pitch.  After BSU tied the game at 1-1 in the third inning on an RBI double by Josh Silvernagel, Wayne State reclaimed the lead at 2-1 in the bottom of the third inning when Justin Hemauer stole home.  Wayne State added two more runs in the fourth inning on a two-RBI single by Brandon Polk.  WSC added another insurance run in the fifth inning on an RBI groundout by Eric Bond to make the final score 5-1. 

            The ‘Cats had seven hits in the game compared to six for BSU.  Brandon Polk went 1 for 3 with two RBI’s while Nick Bidroski and John Plasha each added two hits to lead Wayne State offensively.  John Snyder went the distance on the mound for Wayne State and improved his record to 3-0 on the season.  Snyder allowed six hits and one run with one walk and six strikeouts on the day for the ‘Cats.  Josh Silvernagel went 1 for 3 with an RBI to lead Bemidji State offensively.  Ryan Bohannan took the loss on the mound for BSU in game one and is 0-2 on the season.  Bohannan allowed five runs on six hits with five walks and five strikeouts in the loss. 

            Game two was a tightly contested game with WSC pulling away late for the win.  Wayne State got on the board in the second inning with an RBI bunt single by Eric Bond which gave WSC a 1-0 lead.  Bemidji State answered with two runs in the third inning to take a 2-1 lead on RBI doubles by Josh Silvernagel and Josh Juntunen.  Wayne State reclaimed the lead with two runs in the fifth inning.  Bond led off the inning with a homer down the left field line, and Joe Wendte added an RBI double later in the inning that scored Josh Yost to give WSC a 3-2 lead.  Bemidji State tied the game at 3-3 in the sixth inning thanks to a Wildcat throwing error.  Wayne State came right back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth inning.  With the bases loaded and two out, Justin Hemauer smacked a two-run single to score Jake Ritzdorf and Derek Eversole to give the ‘Cats the 5-3 lead.  Trenton Lee pitched the final inning for WSC, and the ‘Cats held on for the 5-3 win.

            WSC had six hits in the game to five for Bemidji State.  Eric Bond went 2 for 2 with a homer and 2 RBI’s, and Justin Hemauer went 1 for 3 with the game-winning two-RBI single to lead Wayne State offensively.  Matt Meier earned the win in relief for WSC and is 2-0 on the season.  Trenton Lee picked up his first save of the year for Wayne State, allowing no hits and no runs while striking out three in the seventh inning.  Josh Juntunen went 2 for 4 with one RBI and a run scored to lead BSU offensively in the loss.  Brent Vollbrecht (1-2) took the loss on the mound for BSU after allowing five runs and five hits with two walks and two strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings pitched for the Beavers. 

            Wayne State will return to action on Tuesday with two games in Topeka, Kansas.  The ‘Cats will take on Washburn at 1:30 and Emporia State at 4:30.

Coach Disch's comments: Travis is in his third year with our program.  He started his career at Wayne State as a freshman and redshirted.  Then he went to New Mexico Junior College for two years and returned to the Wildcats for his last two seasons.  He is a sure gloved first baseman that earned All-NSIC Gold Glove honors last spring.  Not only does he do well on the baseball field, he also has above a 3.0 grade point average in the classroom.  He will hit in the middle of our order and continue to lead by example.

Coach Unger's comments: Kristen has been a very vocal leader for our squad.  She is a strong athlete and her work ethic is second to none.  Kristen is a very versatile player, but her main priorities will be to hold down first base or spark our offense as the designated player.
