Wednesday March 25, 2009

#3 Emporia State 7 #29 Wayne State 1

#3 Emporia State snapped #29 Wayne State's nine-game win streak with a 7-1 win over the Wildcats Wednesday night in a non-conference baseball game played in Topeka, Kansas.  The 23-5 Hornets continued their mastery over WSC on the baseball diamond, improving to 22-4 all-time against the Wildcats.  With the loss, Wayne State drops to 13-6.

Although Emporia State scored in six of the nine innings to control the game, the Wildcats stranded 14 runners on base against the Hornets and needed a ninth inning solo homer from Seth Chadick to avoid the shutout.

Joe Wendte went 3 for 5 to lead Wayne State's nine-hit effort against Emporia State.  Brandon Polk finished 2 for 3 while John Plasha was 2 for 4.  Seth Chadick belted a solo homer for the Wildcats' lone run of the game.  Emporia State had 13 hits in the game to nine for WSC.

Josh Voth (0-2) suffered the pitching loss for the Wildcats, allowing four runs on eight hits over five and two-thirds innings.  Jared Hegdahl pitched two innings of relief, yielding two runs, both unearned, on two hits.  Jim Sake allowed one hit in two-thirds of an inning with Trenton Lee recording the final two outs, allowing one run on two hits.

Wayne State returns to Northern Sun Conference play this weekend vs. Minnesota Duluth.  The games will likely be moved to Wayne due to poor weather conditions in Minnesota.  The official days and times of the games should be announced by Thursday.
