Southern Indiana 5 #24 Wayne State 4

A dropped fly ball with two outs in the seventh inning allowed Southern Indiana to score the game-winning run as the host Screaming Eagles edged #24 Wayne State 5-4 in college baseball played Friday afternoon in Evansville, Indiana.  Southern Indiana is now 7-5 on the season with the win while Wayne State falls to 3-2 overall.

Southern Indiana jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead on the Wildcats in the first inning, roughing up WSC starter John Snyder for four runs on four hits.  WSC scored once in the second inning to make the score 4-1 when junior catcher John Plasha doubled and later scored on Justin Hemauer’s RBI single to left-center field.  The Wildcats evened the score at 4-4 in the third inning scoring three runs.  Alex Koch walked and crossed the plate on Eric Bond’s two-run homer.  Plasha then tied the score at 4-4 with a solo homer to left field.

The score remained tied until Southern Indiana scored an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh inning to take a 5-4 lead.  Southern Indiana’s Wes Fink was hit by the pitch and with two outs scored when Chad Werry’s fly ball to left field was dropped by Wildcat left fielder Justin Hemauer, allowing Fink to score the eventual game-winning run.  In the ninth inning, Wayne State placed runners at first and third with two outs after Matt Dunn walked and Mike Bisenius singled, but Plasha struck out swinging against USI’s Shaun Larsen to end the game.

Wayne State outhit Southern Indiana 11-6 in the game.  USI had just two hits against the Wildcats after the first inning.  John Plasha was 2 for 5 with a homer and double and two runs scored to lead WSC at the plate.  Joe Wendte finished the day 2 for 3 with a double while Justin Hemauer was 2 for 4 and Mike Bisenius added two hits in five plate appearances.  Eric Bond was 1 for 4 with two RBI’s thanks to his third inning, two-run homer.

Jared Hegdahl (0-1) was tagged with the pitching loss for Wayne State.  He worked 2 1/3 innings in relief, allowing just one hit and one run (unearned) with one strikeout.  John Snyder started the game, allowing four runs on five hits in 3 2/3 innings with two walks and four strikeouts.  Josh Voth relieved Snyder, pitching two innings without allowing a run or hit.  He struck out one and walked three.

Wayne State will play again Saturday in Evansville, Indiana, battling Spalding University of Kentucky at 11:00 a.m. and host Southern Indiana at 2:00 p.m.
