Game 1 - Wayne State 8 University of Mary 0

Game 2 - Wayne State 2 University of Mary 0

The Wayne State College softball team earned 8-0 and 2-0 wins over the University of Mary on Friday afternoon in Wayne.  With the wins, Wayne State improved to 23-12 overall and 8-1 in the NSIC.  Mary dropped to 6-23 overall and 1-5 in the NSIC with the losses.

Wayne State jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first inning of game one.  Amy Sandstrom and Hannah Engelkamp each reached on Mary errors, and Blaire Kuhl had an infield single to load the bases.  Jennifer Radley followed with a grand slam to left field to give WSC the early 4-0 lead.  Wayne State added three more runs in the second inning on a three-run homer to center by Kuhl, giving the Wildcats a 7-0 lead.  The ‘Cats added a single run in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Brittany Greenwood to make the score 8-0.  That was more than enough run support for Wildcat starting pitcher Katie Goetzinger, who allowed just three Mary hits in the Wayne State 8-0 win.

Jennifer Radley and Blaire Kuhl led the way offensively for Wayne State in game one.  Radley was 2 for 2 with a grand slam, and Kuhl was 3 for 3 with a homer, three runs batted in, and three runs scored for the ‘Cats.  Katie Goetzinger earned the win on the mound for Wayne State and is 16-8 on the season.  Goetzinger worked all five innings in the game and allowed just three hits with one walk and five strikeouts.  Jenna Button, Samantha Antolin and Dre Brunskill had the only hits on the day for Mary.  Brooke Hageness (0-2) suffered the loss on the mound for the Marauders.  Hageness allowed seven runs on five hits with one walk and one strikeout in just 1 2/3 innings of work.

In game two, Wayne State took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI single by Amber Baird.  Sam Earleywine added an RBI double in the fourth inning to give Wayne State a 2-0 lead.  That was all the run support needed for Wayne State pitching as Amber Baird and Katie Goetzinger combined for a six-hit shutout.  Baird worked the first 4 2/3 innings and allowed just five hits with two strikeouts.  Goetzinger worked the final 2 1/3 innings and allowed just one hit while striking out four batters to pick up her second save of the season for WSC.

Sam Earleywine went 2 for 2 with an RBI double to lead Wayne State offensively in the win.  Jennifer Radley went 1 for 3 with two runs scored, and Amber Baird went 1 for 3 with an RBI for the ‘Cats.  Blaire Kuhl also extended her hitting streak to 16 games with a single in the sixth inning.  Maegan Lunn went 2 for 3 for Mary in the loss.  Ashley Watson (3-8) suffered the loss on the mound for the Marauders, allowing one run and three hits in 1 1/3 innings of work.

Wayne State will host Northern State in an NSIC double-header tomorrow afternoon.  The games are set to begin at noon at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex in Wayne.
