#28 Wayne State 12 Briar Cliff 5
The #28 Wayne State baseball team scored early and often in a 12-5 non-conference baseball win over Briar Cliff on Thursday afternoon in Wayne, snapping a six-game winning streak for the Chargers. Wayne State improved to 18-7 with the win. Briar Cliff dropped to 14-16 on the year with the loss.
After a scoreless first inning, Wayne State got on the board in the bottom of the second using one hit and two Briar Cliff errors to take a 1-0 lead. The Chargers tied the game in the top of the third inning on a fielder’s choice that scored Tracy Whitfield from third. Wayne State responded with a five-run third inning to take a 6-1 lead. Joe Wendte was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Treye Hacker and Alex Koch each singled to load the bases. Mike Bisenius walked to score Wendte for the first run of the inning. After John Plasha struck out for the first out of the inning, Nick Bidroski delivered a three-run triple to score Hacker, Koch and Bisenius. Eric Bond followed with an RBI double to score Bidroski to close out the five-run inning for WSC. The ‘Cats added another run in the fourth inning on a solo homer by Hacker to give WSC a 7-1 lead. Wayne State added more insurance runs with two runs in the fifth and three more runs in the sixth to take a 12-1 lead. Bidroski had a sacrifice fly to score Hacker, and Brandon Polk added a two-run single for the Wildcats in their three-run sixth inning. Briar Cliff scored two runs in the eighth on a two-run homer by Tanner Oliver to make the score 12-3. The Chargers added two more runs in the ninth inning on a two-run double by Louis Beare, but WSC closed out the 12-5 victory.
Wayne State had 13 hits in the game compared to nine for Briar Cliff. Briar Cliff had three errors to just one for WSC. Treye Hacker, Alex Koch and Eric Bond all had two hits, and Nick Bidroski had four RBI’s to lead the way offensively for the ‘Cats in the win. Tom Doran earned the win on the mound for Wayne State and is 2-0 on the season. Doran allowed just one run and four hits with three walks in five innings of work. Louis Beare went 3 for 5 with two RBI’s for Briar Cliff in the loss. Nick Hegge (0-2) took the loss on the mound for Briar Cliff. Hegge allowed eight hits and nine runs with two walks and four strikeouts in four innings of work for the Chargers.
Wayne State will host Concordia-St. Paul on Friday and Saturday to continue NSIC play. Friday's doubleheader will begin at 1:00 p.m. with Saturday's twinbill scheduled to start at noon at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex in Wayne.
