#28 Wayne State 4 Concordia-St. Paul 3

John Plasha's single to left field drove home Treye Hacker with the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to highlight a three-run rally as the #28 Wayne State College baseball team won its third straight game over Concordia, St. Paul with a 4-3 victory over the Golden Bears on Saturday in Wayne.  The second game of the double-header was called off due to the weather.  With the win, Wayne State improved to 21-7 overall with a perfect 11-0 mark in the NSIC.  Concordia, St. Paul dropped to 20-9 overall and 1-6 in the NSIC with the loss.

                         

The Golden Bears jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning.  Jake Schmidt led off the inning with a single and later scored on an RBI double by Jon Stockton.  Wayne State tied the game in the second inning on an RBI single by John Plasha, which scored Alex Koch who had walked earlier in the inning.  Concordia-St. Paul reclaimed the lead with single runs in the third and fourth innings.  Chris Herbert had an RBI single for CSP in the third, and Stockton added an RBI single in the fourth, giving the visiting Golden Bears a 3-1 lead. 

The score remained the same until the bottom of the seventh inning when Wayne State erupted for three runs on three hits.  Jake Ritzdorf led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second base on a single by Joe Wendte.  Treye Hacker followed with a bunt single to load the bases for WSC.  After a strikeout for the first out of the inning, Mike Bisenius earned a walk to score Ritzdorf, making the score 3-2 in favor of the Golden Bears.  Nick Bidroski then grounded out to first base which scored Wendte to tie the game at 3-3.  With runners at second and third and two outs, John Plasha delivered a game-winning RBI single off the left field fence to give the ‘Cats the exciting 4-3 win. 

           

Concordia-St. Paul had 10 hits in the game to nine for Wayne State, and WSC had two errors in the game.  John Plasha went 3 for 4 with two runs batted in, including the game-winning double, to lead Wayne State offensively in the win.  Joe Wendte added two hits for the Wildcats on the day.  Jared Hegdahl (1-1) earned the win on the mound for Wayne State, allowing no runs and no hits with one walk and three strikeouts in two innings of relief for the ‘Cats.  John Snyder started the game for WSC, allowing three runs on 10 hits with one walk and three strikeouts in five innings of work. 

Jon Stockton went 3 for 4 with two runs batted in and a run scored for Concordia-St. Paul.  Jake Schmidt and Bryan Lippincott had two hits apiece for the Golden Bears.  Kirk Ingram took the loss on the mound for CSP, allowing two runs and three hits with one walk and one strikeout in a relief effort.  Chris Kimpton started the game for Concordia-St. Paul and allowed two runs on six hits with five walks and three strikeouts in six innings of work.     

           

Wayne State is scheduled to play at Augustana College in a 1:00 p.m. NSIC doubleheader on Tuesday.

Coach Disch's comments: Travis is in his third year with our program.  He started his career at Wayne State as a freshman and redshirted.  Then he went to New Mexico Junior College for two years and returned to the Wildcats for his last two seasons.  He is a sure gloved first baseman that earned All-NSIC Gold Glove honors last spring.  Not only does he do well on the baseball field, he also has above a 3.0 grade point average in the classroom.  He will hit in the middle of our order and continue to lead by example.

What makes you the person you are today? Everything I have been through, good or bad, in my life has taught me all that I know.  My mom and grandmother have taught me as well.
Coach Unger's comments: Kristen has been a very vocal leader for our squad.  She is a strong athlete and her work ethic is second to none.  Kristen is a very versatile player, but her main priorities will be to hold down first base or spark our offense as the designated player.
