WSC volleyball extends win streak to eight with two wins at Rockhurst Tournament

The Wayne State College volleyball team extended its win streak to eight games Friday with a pair of wins at the Rockhurst Tournament in Kansas City. The Wildcats opened the tournament with a 25-10, 25-18 and 25-20 win over Fort Hays State, then rallied for a 19-25, 25-22, 25-22 and 27-25 win over host Rockhurst. The Wildcats are now 9-2 on the season with the two wins.
In the win over Fort Hays State, junior middle hitter Jennifer Hefner accounted for 12 kills and four blocks to pace the Wildcats offensively while Lea Hartigan added nine kills. Setter Diedra Artz was credited with 30 set assists to go with three service aces and sophomore libero Leigh Connot recorded 12 digs for the Wildcats.
WSC rallied from a 25-19 loss in the first game against Rockhurst and won three close games to rally for the 3-1 match win over the host Hawks. Hefner led a balanced hitting attack with 18 kills in the win followed by Hartigan with 14 and Tali Fredrickson 12. Artz handed out 50 set assists and Connot had 31 digs with Tessa Wietfeld adding 16 digs and Fredrickson 13. Rockhurst did outhit the Wildcats in the match .235-.180 and had one more kill (57-56) than WSC.
Wayne State will play two more matches at the Rockhurst Tournament on Saturday, meeting Illinois-Springfield at 9:00 a.m. and Missouri Western at 1:00 p.m.
