The Wayne State College women's soccer team scored with 6:55 remaining in the second half to tie the University of Mary 2-2 in double overtime Sunday afternoon at the Wayne State College Soccer Complex in Wayne, America. The tie makes Wayne State 3-1-2 overall and 0-0-2 in the NSIC and the stalemate leaves the Marauders 1-4-1, 0-1-1 in conference play.
Mary came out firing scoring 2:20 into the match when Michelle Jones buried a pass from Jessica Curl from 12 yards out to give the Marauders a 1-0 lead. Wayne State tied the match at the 37:31 mark of the first stanza as Kelsey Meyer scored her second goal of the season on a 25 yard shot.
Curl gave the Marauders a 2-1 lead at the 47:18 mark of the second half scoring on a penalty kick. Wayne State added only three shots in the second half, but the Wildcats took advantage of a corner kick with 6:55 remaining as the ball deflected off a Mary player and found its way past Marauder keeper Kassie Young to tie the game at 2-2. Both teams battled in overtime, but neither team could find the net as the teams walked away with a 2-2 tie.
The Marauders outshot Wayne State 25-16 in the match. Mary also had an advantage in corner kicks 13-4 with eight corner kicks coming in the first half. Wayne State managed to find the net in the match with eight of the Wildcats shots reaching the goalkeeper.
Wayne State was led by Meyer with one goal and also had four shots on goal for WSC. Megan Dias added three shots for WSC offensively. Goalkeeper Emily Walker was superb in net turning away 11 shots on the afternoon.
Wayne State College will be on the road next weekend, visiting travel partner Augustana College in a Northern Sun Conference contest starting at 1:00 p.m. in Sioux Falls.
