WSC soccer defeats SW Minnesota State 1-0 for first win of the season

Wayne State 1 Southwest Minnesota State 0

The Wayne State College soccer team scored a late goal to earn a 1-0 win over Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday morning in Wayne.  It was the first win of the year for the Wildcats who are now 1-13-1 overall and 1-7 in the NSIC.  Southwest Minnesota State fell to 1-11 overall and 1-7 in the NSIC with the loss.

Southwest Minnesota State held a 16-9 advantage in shots over WSC.  However, the game remained scoreless until late in the second half when Willow Nyman-Jones scored her first goal of the season with 1:18 remaining in the game to give the 'Cats the win.  Val Robinson had three shots and Stephanie Bright and Tiffani Kellerman each had two shots for WSC on the day.  Tatum Borstad had five shots to lead SMSU while Courtney McCarthy and Ashley Elbers each had three shots for the Mustangs.  Emily Walker made seven saves and earned the win in goal for Wayne State.  Kendra Olchefske took the loss in goal for Southwest Minnesota State and made one save.  

Wayne State will host #16 Minnesota State on Sunday.  The game is set for 1:00 p.m. at the Wayne State Soccer Complex.

Coach Disch's comments: Travis is in his third year with our program.  He started his career at Wayne State as a freshman and redshirted.  Then he went to New Mexico Junior College for two years and returned to the Wildcats for his last two seasons.  He is a sure gloved first baseman that earned All-NSIC Gold Glove honors last spring.  Not only does he do well on the baseball field, he also has above a 3.0 grade point average in the classroom.  He will hit in the middle of our order and continue to lead by example.

What makes you the person you are today? Everything I have been through, good or bad, in my life has taught me all that I know.  My mom and grandmother have taught me as well.
Coach Unger's comments: Kristen has been a very vocal leader for our squad.  She is a strong athlete and her work ethic is second to none.  Kristen is a very versatile player, but her main priorities will be to hold down first base or spark our offense as the designated player.
