Colorado Christian 62 Wayne State 59 OT
Colorado Christian rallied from an 11-point deficit early in the second half and defeated Wayne State College 62-59 in overtime at the Colorado School of Mines Tip Off Classic in Golden, Colorado Saturday evening in the season opener for both clubs.
WSC jumped out to an early 9-0 lead and had several 11 point leads in the first half, including 26-15 with 54 seconds left in the first half, before settling for a 26-19 halftime lead. In the second half, the Wildcats took a 32-21 lead with 17:38 to play following a layup by Kati Jo Christensen, but Colorado Christian scored the next 11 points and tied the game at 32-32 with 14:43 remaining. The two teams exchanged several leads and ties, but with Colorado Christian holding a 48-47 lead with 6:49 left, WSC scored six straight points to go in front 53-48 with 2:58 to go. However, Colorado Christian responded and tied the score at 53 apiece with 29 seconds on a three pointer by Jodie Krall.
Wayne State's Jodie Boss gave the 'Cats a 55-53 lead with 14 seconds to play on a layup, but CCU's Talmai Aguirre hit a jumper with five seconds left to send the game into overtime tied at 55. In the overtime, WSC hit just 1 of 6 shots and still had a chance to send the game into a second overtime as a three pointer by Jennifer Yee was missed with four seconds left with the 'Cats trailing 62-59 and Colorado Christian escaped with the come-from-behind win.
Laquisha Cook led WSC in scoring with 14 points followed by Jodie Boss with 13 and Kati Jo Christensen 10. The 'Cats made just 24 of 65 shots from the field for 36.9 percent, including 1 of 10 from the three point line. WSC was 10 of 14 at the free throw stripe. The Wildcats had 27 turnovers in the game.
For Colorado Christian, Talmai Aguirre poured in a game-high 22 points followed by Abby Rosenthal with 14 points and 13 rebounds. CCU was 23 of 74 from the field (31.1%), 5 of 26 from the three point line and 11 of 20 at the charity stripe.
Colorado Christian out-rebounded Wayne State 53-49. JulieAnn Wagner hauled in 12 rebounds to lead the 'Cats on the boards. Jodie Boss added eight rebounds and six blocked shots for WSC.
The Wildcats look to rebound from Saturday's season opening loss by playing host Colorado Mines Sunday afternoon at 5:00 p.m. Central Time.
