Adams State College (Colorado) held on for a 3-2 win over Wayne State in women’s soccer on Thursday afternoon in the season opening game for both teams.  Wayne State jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a free kick by Megan Kenealy in the 14th minute.  Adams State’s Cori Rich tied the game at 1-1 in the 21st minute on a shot from the right wing.  Adams State took the lead in the 24th minute on a penalty kick by Amber Drumm, and the Grizzlies took a 2-1 lead into the halftime break.

           

The score remained the same until the 64th minute when Amber Drumm scored her second goal of the game for Adams State, giving the Grizzlies a 3-1 advantage.  Valerie Robinson scored on a penalty kick in the 67th minute to pull Wayne State within one at 3-2.  However, Adams State was able to hold on for the victory.  Kirsten Dorsey made six saves for Adams State to earn the win in goal.  Emily Walker made one save and took the loss at goal for Wayne State.  Both teams finished with 13 shots and six corner kicks in the game.  Adams State had 21 fouls in the game to only seven for Wayne State.       

Wayne State will be in action this weekend playing a pair of contests at the Newman University Tournament in Wichita, Kansas.  The Wildcats meet host Newman on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. followed by a Sunday matchup vs. Southwestern Oklahoma State at 3:00 p.m. in Wichita.

Coach Disch's comments: Travis is in his third year with our program.  He started his career at Wayne State as a freshman and redshirted.  Then he went to New Mexico Junior College for two years and returned to the Wildcats for his last two seasons.  He is a sure gloved first baseman that earned All-NSIC Gold Glove honors last spring.  Not only does he do well on the baseball field, he also has above a 3.0 grade point average in the classroom.  He will hit in the middle of our order and continue to lead by example.

What makes you the person you are today? Everything I have been through, good or bad, in my life has taught me all that I know.  My mom and grandmother have taught me as well.
Coach Unger's comments: Kristen has been a very vocal leader for our squad.  She is a strong athlete and her work ethic is second to none.  Kristen is a very versatile player, but her main priorities will be to hold down first base or spark our offense as the designated player.
