Wayne State Men's Golf Spring Invitational Final Results

The Wayne State College men's golf team rallied from a three-shot deficit after the first day to top Upper Iowa by three shots, 598-601, to win the two-day Wayne State College Spring Invitational Men's Golf Tournament that wrapped up today (Monday) at the Wayne Country Club.  The Wildcats shot an impressive 295 today in extremely windy conditions, combined with Sunday's 303, for a two-day 598 to rally for the win over Upper Iowa who shot rounds of 300 and 301 for a 601.

Rounding out the team scoring were the Wayne State Gold Team (JV) in third at 616 (312-304), Morningside College was fourth at 619 (315-304), Concordia, St. Paul in fifth at 623 (315-308), Augustana College sixth at 630 (315-315) and Central Community College of Columbus seventh at 646 (327-319).

Glenwood, Iowa freshman Tyler Thompson led a balanced attack for Wayne State finishing in second place overall with a two-day score of 148 after shooting rounds of 77 and one-under par 71 today.  Tyler DeJong, a sophomore from Papillion-LaVista, earned the seventh place medal with a 151 (76-75) followed by Sioux City Heelan sophomore Adam Fields in eighth at 152 (79-73) and Bellevue West sophomore Jake Hirz in ninth at 152 (74-78).  Blake Thompson, a senior from Glenwood, Iowa, rounded out the stellar scoring for WSC with a 152, shooting back-to-back rounds of 76.

The WSC Gold Team (JV) had two players place in the top 10 to earn medals as Norfolk sophomore Brett Shively finished fifth overall with a 150 (77-73) while Mullen sophomore Michael Phillips collected the 10th place medal with a 152 (78-74).  Other WSC JV scores included Justin Cunningham at 159 (77-82), Keith Eriksen with a 161 (85-76) and Scott Barnes also shooting a 161 with rounds of 80 and 81.

Wayne State College will be in action again on Sunday and Monday, March 29 and 30th, when the Wildcats play in St. Joseph, Missouri at the Moila Country Club Spring NSIC Meet.

Coach Disch's comments: Travis is in his third year with our program.  He started his career at Wayne State as a freshman and redshirted.  Then he went to New Mexico Junior College for two years and returned to the Wildcats for his last two seasons.  He is a sure gloved first baseman that earned All-NSIC Gold Glove honors last spring.  Not only does he do well on the baseball field, he also has above a 3.0 grade point average in the classroom.  He will hit in the middle of our order and continue to lead by example.

What makes you the person you are today? Everything I have been through, good or bad, in my life has taught me all that I know.  My mom and grandmother have taught me as well.
Coach Unger's comments: Kristen has been a very vocal leader for our squad.  She is a strong athlete and her work ethic is second to none.  Kristen is a very versatile player, but her main priorities will be to hold down first base or spark our offense as the designated player.
