#29 Wayne State College improved to 6-0 in NSIC play with two wins over Minnesota Duluth on Saturday afternoon in Wayne.  Scores of the games were 11-3 and 9-3.  The games were moved from Duluth, Minnesota to Wayne due to poor weather in northern Minnesota.  Wayne State improved to 15-6 overall and 6-0 in the NSIC with the wins while Minnesota Duluth dropped to 8-14 overall and 0-2 in the NSIC with the losses.

            Wayne State set the tone early in game one with seven runs in the first inning.  John Plasha’s three-run triple and Nick Bidroski’s RBI triple highlighted the Wildcat first inning while Alex Koch, Eric Bond and Brandon Polk each added RBI’s for the ‘Cats in the opening inning of play.  WSC then added two more runs in the second inning on a Duluth wild pitch and an RBI groundout by Mike Bisenius which gave WSC a commanding 9-0 lead.  Minnesota Duluth got on the board in the second inning on an RBI double by Brian Burman.  Wayne State added two more runs in the fourth inning, using a Minnesota Duluth error and an RBI single by Bisenius to take an 11-1 lead.  The Bulldogs were able to score two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, but Wayne State cruised to the 11-3 win.

            The ‘Cats had nine hits in game one compared to just five for Minnesota Duluth.  John Plasha went 1 for 4 with three RBI’s, and Mike Bisenius went 1 for 3 with two RBI’s to lead the way offensively for WSC.  Chad Moreland (2-2) earned the win on the mound for Wayne State, allowing one run and three hits with one walk and three strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings pitched.  Brian Burman went 2 for 2 with an RBI and a run scored for Minnesota Duluth in the loss.  Gary Wilfahrt took the loss on the mound for UMD and is 0-3 on the season.  Wilfahrt allowed nine hits and 11 runs with five walks and three strikeouts in five innings of work for the Bulldogs.

            In game two, Wayne State took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on an RBI double by Justin Hemauer that scored Matt Dunn from second base.  The ‘Cats added three more runs in the fourth inning to take a 4-0 lead.  Treye Hacker’s two-RBI triple highlighted the three-run fourth inning for WSC.  The ‘Cats then broke the game wide open with five runs in the sixth inning to take a 9-0 lead.  Hacker drove in the first run of the inning with an RBI single.  Brandon Polk added a two-RBI single which scored Jake Ritzdorf and Hacker.  Matt Dunn then stole home during a double steal by WSC, and Joe Wendte walked to drive in a run to close out the five-run sixth inning for Wayne State.  Minnesota Duluth scored a single run in the bottom of the sixth and added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh for the final score of 9-3. 

            Minnesota Duluth had eight hits in game two compared to seven for Wayne State.  Treye Hacker went 2 for 4 with three RBI’s and two runs scored to lead the way offensively for Wayne State in the win.  Brandon Polk added two RBI’s for the ‘Cats.  Austen Wisroth picked up the win for Wayne State and is 3-1 on the season.  Wisroth allowed just one run on six hits with one walk and 10 strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings pitched for Wayne State.  Tyler Erickson went 3 for 4 with an RBI and run scored for Duluth.  Collin Stinogel took the loss on the mound and is 1-1 on the season.  Stinogel allowed nine runs and seven hits with one walk and four strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings pitched for the Bulldogs.      

Wayne State will face Minnesota Duluth in another NSIC doubleheader to close out the four-game series in Wayne on Sunday starting at noon.

Coach Disch's comments: Travis is in his third year with our program.  He started his career at Wayne State as a freshman and redshirted.  Then he went to New Mexico Junior College for two years and returned to the Wildcats for his last two seasons.  He is a sure gloved first baseman that earned All-NSIC Gold Glove honors last spring.  Not only does he do well on the baseball field, he also has above a 3.0 grade point average in the classroom.  He will hit in the middle of our order and continue to lead by example.

Coach Unger's comments: Kristen has been a very vocal leader for our squad.  She is a strong athlete and her work ethic is second to none.  Kristen is a very versatile player, but her main priorities will be to hold down first base or spark our offense as the designated player.
