Junior shortstop Eric Bond was 7 for 10 with four RBI’s and seven runs scored to power #27 Wayne State in a 13-4 and 16-1 sweep over Southwest Baptist in non-conference baseball played in Bolivar, Missouri Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats, who pounded 32 hits in the doubleheader sweep, move to 24-8 on the season with the wins while dropping the Bearcats of Southwest Baptist to 7-29.
The first game saw plenty of offense from the Wildcats to go with strong pitching from Chad Moreland, who won his fourth straight start, as WSC posted a 13-4 win. The ‘Cats scored three runs in the first, third and fourth innings to grab a commanding 9-0 advantage after four innings of play and never looked back as five different players had two or more hits to lead the 14-hit attack in the win.
Bond was 3 for 5 with a double and three runs scored to lead the balanced attack at the plate. Joe Wendte was 2 for 4 with four RBI and four runs scored while Alex Koch finished 2 for 4 with three RBI’s. Justin Hemauer and Treye Hacker also added two hits apiece in the win.
Moreland (4-2) earned the pitching win, allowing just two hits and no runs in five innings with four strikeouts and one walk. Reid Lancaster and Matt Meier also saw action in relief as Lancaster gave up four runs on five hits in 1 2/3 innings while Meier worked the final 2 1/3 innings without allowing a hit, striking out one and walking one.
The second game saw WSC record a season-high 18 hits as the Wildcats cruised to a 16-1 win over the Bearcats. Bond continued his stellar day by going 4 for 5 with four runs scored to go with four RBI’s. He had two doubles and a homer batting from the leadoff spot for the first time this season. Alex Koch was 3 for 4 with four RBI’s including his fifth homer of the season. Wendte finished 2 for 3 with a homer, two RBI’s and two runs scored. Mike Bisenius had two hits with a homer while Josh Yost also finished with two hits.
John Snyder (5-0) pitched five scoreless innings to earn the win, allowing just two hits while notching seven strikeouts to just one walk. Austen Wisroth worked the final two innings, yielding one run on two hits with three strikeouts.
Wayne State will returns to Northern Sun Conference play Wednesday traveling to Sioux Falls for a doubleheader against Augustana College starting at 1:00 p.m.
