Wayne State College is ranked 10th in the first NCAA Division II Central Region Women's Basketball Rankings released Wednesday afternoon by the NCAA national committee in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Central Region is comprised of teams from the Great American Conference, Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association and Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
The Wildcats are 20-6 overall and 18-6 against NCAA Division II teams overall and in-region.
Southwestern Oklahoma State from the Great American Conference leads the rankings followed by Central Missouri from the MIAA in second. MSU Moorhead, Augustana and Northern State, all from the Northern Sun Conference, fill out the top five teams.
Four MIAA teams – Nebraska-Kearney, Emporia State, Pittsburg State and Central Oklahoma, are ranked sixth through ninth, with Wayne State coming in 10th.
The top eight teams from the region advance to the NCAA Central Region Tournament March 9, 10 and 12. Automatic bids are granted to the winners of the three conference tournaments with the remaining five spots awarded to teams on an at-large basis.
Wayne State, 22-6 on the season and second place in the NSIC South with a 16-4 league record, closes the regular season on the road this weekend at Upper Iowa Friday at 6 p.m. and Winona State Saturday at 4 p.m.
