Wayne State College track and field/cross country coach Marlon Brink announced today that three high school standouts have signed national letters of intent to attend Wayne State College and complete in cross country and track and field. They include Joe Chebul of Bellevue West High School, Adam Meyer of Papillion-LaVista South High School and Zach Pierson of Papillion-LaVista High School.
Chebul will compete in cross country and track and field at Wayne State. He is a three-year letter winner in both sports at Bellevue West High School. Chebul finished 18th at the 2007 Class A State Cross Country Meet last fall with a time of 17:05.73 (personal best) while helping his team to a seventh place finish. He was named the Bellevue Leader Runner of the Year and MVP of his team. In track and field, Chebul ran a leg on Bellevue West's fifth-place 3200 meter relay team last spring.
“Joe is a good cross country and middle distance runner,” remarked Coach Brink. “He has competed against some of the best runners in the state so I know he will handle the transition to college running very smoothly.”
Meyer will also compete in both cross country and track and field at WSC. He is a two-time state qualifier in cross country for Papillion-LaVista South High School while also competing at the Class A State Track and Field Meet last spring as a junior. Meyer just missed earning a medal at the Class A State Cross Country Meet as a junior and senior, placing 16th last fall as a senior (16:56) and 17th as a junior (16:49). He has lettered three years in both sports.
“Adam has had a successful high school career and I think he is only going to get better in college,” commented Brink. “I feel he will be ready for the challenges of the NSIC next year as our conference will become much tougher with four new schools. Adam should make a successful transition to the longer distance races available at the college level and I think he can compete for a top seven spot on our cross country team next fall.”
Zach Pierson will compete in track and field for the Wildcats. He is a two year letter winner for Papillion-LaVista High School and ran a leg on the sixth place 1600 meter relay team last spring at the Class A State Track and Field Meet. Pierson also lettered two years in football at Papillion-LaVista High School.
“Zach is a good sprinter and hard worker,” stated Brink. “He has high goals set for himself and I think that will help him in his success at the college level. I think Zach will contribute immediately to our long sprints and relays.”
Wayne State College is an NCAA Division II school located in Wayne, Nebraska and competes in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The Wildcats are the two-time defending indoor and outdoor champions in men's track and field in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
