Wayne State defeats MSU Moorhead 3-1 Saturday afternoon

Wayne State 3 MSU Moorhead 0

    The #19 Wayne State College volleyball team defeated MSU Moorhead 3-1 (25-21, 25-16, 20-25, 25-16) Saturday afternoon at Rice Auditorium in Wayne. The win makes the Wildcats 19-4 overall and 7-2 in the NSIC and the loss drops the Dragons to 14-8 overall and 4-5 in the NSIC.

            Wayne State won the first two games in the match, but MSU Moorhead hit .368 in game three to sneak past WSC 25-20. The Wildcats responded in game four by hitting .324 to take the game 25-16 and the match 3-1

            The Wildcats were led offensively by Tali Fredrickson who had 16 kills on the afternoon for WSC. Junior Lea Hartigan added 15 kills and Jennifer Hefner added nine on the afternoon. Setter Diedra Artz was credited with 42 set assists for WSC.

            Wayne State was led defensively by Leigh Connot who had 19 digs for the Wildcats on the afternoon. Fredrickson added 17 digs and Nicole Brungardt had 11 digs for WSC. Jennifer Hefner the NSIC leader in blocks, had three blocks and Diedra Artz added three blocks as well for WSC.

            MSU Moorhead was led by freshman Heidi Lensing who 14 kills for the Dragons. Laura Tvrdik added 10 kills for MSU Moorhead on the afternoon. Setter Laura Splittstoesser was credited with 37 set assists for MSU Moorhead. Defensivley, MSU Moorhead was led by Katy Ness who had 18 digs on the afternoon for the Dragons. Tvrdik added five blocks for the Dragons to lead MSU Moorhead in blocks.

`           The Wildcats will be on the road next weekend as they travel to Winona State on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and then head to Upper Iowa to play the Peacocks at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday.

Coach Disch's comments: Travis is in his third year with our program.  He started his career at Wayne State as a freshman and redshirted.  Then he went to New Mexico Junior College for two years and returned to the Wildcats for his last two seasons.  He is a sure gloved first baseman that earned All-NSIC Gold Glove honors last spring.  Not only does he do well on the baseball field, he also has above a 3.0 grade point average in the classroom.  He will hit in the middle of our order and continue to lead by example.

What makes you the person you are today? Everything I have been through, good or bad, in my life has taught me all that I know.  My mom and grandmother have taught me as well.
Coach Unger's comments: Kristen has been a very vocal leader for our squad.  She is a strong athlete and her work ethic is second to none.  Kristen is a very versatile player, but her main priorities will be to hold down first base or spark our offense as the designated player.
