Balanced attack leads Wayne State past Minnesota, Crookston 3-0

Wayne State 3 Minnesota, Crookston 0

The 19th- ranked Wayne State volleyball team used a balanced offensive attack to defeat Minnesota, Crookston 3-0 (25-13, 25-20, 25-13) Friday night at Rice auditorium in Wayne. Wayne State is now 18-4 overall and 6-2 in the NSIC. The loss drops Minnesota, Crookston to 3-17 overall and 0-8 in the NSIC.

            The Wildcats were led by junior Jennifer Hefner who had eight kills on the evening. Sophomore Tali Fredrickson and junior Lea Hartigan each added seven kills for WSC. Wayne State’s offense was rounded out by sophomores Shelby Schultz who had six kills and Mindy Moody who added five kills. Setter Diedra Artz was credited with 26 set assists on the night. Wayne State outhit Minnesota, Crookston .341 to .057 on the night.

            Wayne State was led defensively by Fredrickson who had nine digs in the match Sophomore Leigh Connot added eight digs for the Wildcats on the night. Hefner lead WSC with three blocks and Schultz added two blocks for the Wildcats.

            Minnesota, Crookston was led by Nebraska native Amber Meyer who had nine kills and two blocks on the night. Setter Shannon Cologna was credited with 26 set assists in the match. Defensivley, Jaclyn Slepicka led the Golden eagles with eight digs.                

            Wayne State will be at home Saturday afternoon, hosting MSU Moorhead in a Northern Sun Conference match beginning at 4:00 p.m. at Rice Auditorium.

Coach Disch's comments: Travis is in his third year with our program.  He started his career at Wayne State as a freshman and redshirted.  Then he went to New Mexico Junior College for two years and returned to the Wildcats for his last two seasons.  He is a sure gloved first baseman that earned All-NSIC Gold Glove honors last spring.  Not only does he do well on the baseball field, he also has above a 3.0 grade point average in the classroom.  He will hit in the middle of our order and continue to lead by example.

What makes you the person you are today? Everything I have been through, good or bad, in my life has taught me all that I know.  My mom and grandmother have taught me as well.
Coach Unger's comments: Kristen has been a very vocal leader for our squad.  She is a strong athlete and her work ethic is second to none.  Kristen is a very versatile player, but her main priorities will be to hold down first base or spark our offense as the designated player.
