Fredrickson double trouble for #15 WSC in 3-1 win over Augustana

            Sophomore outside hitter Tali Fredrickson produced 16 kills and 17 digs for her 14th double double to lead the NCAA Division II 15th-ranked Wayne State College volleyball team to a 3-1 NSIC volleyball win over Augustana Tuesday evening on White Out Night at Rice Auditorium in Wayne.  Scores of the match were 25-21, 25-27, 25-20 and 25-19.  The Wildcats improved to 27-6 overall and 15-3 before a crowd of 711 fans while Augustana dropped to 12-18 overall and 7-11 in league play.

            In the first set with the score tied at 7-7, WSC scored seven straight points to take a 14-7 lead and take control of the first set with a 25-21 win.  The second set saw Augustana take the early lead and use 18 kills to edge the Wildcats 27-25.  In the third set, WSC held the lead for most of the way and had 14 kills to beat the Vikings 25-20.  The fourth set saw WSC rally from an early deficit, then scored four straight points with the score tied at 17-17 to take the set 25-19 and win the match 3-1.

            Fredrickson’s 16 kills led WSC in hitting followed by Jennifer Hefner with 15 and Mindy Moody with 12.  As a team, WSC hit .209 in the match with 56 kills while holding Augustana to a .165 hitting percentage.  Senior Tessa Wietfeld, in her final home game of her Wildcat career, notched a team-high 23 digs followed by libero Leigh Connot with 19 and Fredrickson with 17.  Setter Diedra Artz handed out 46 set assists to go with 12 digs in the win.

            For Augustana, Ellen Andrews finished with 16 kills while Brianna Erickson had 10.  Libero Grace Sanders ended with 28 digs for the Vikings.

            Wayne State will close out the regular season on the road this weekend, visiting Minnesota, Crookston Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. and MSU Moorhead Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.

Coach Disch's comments: Travis is in his third year with our program.  He started his career at Wayne State as a freshman and redshirted.  Then he went to New Mexico Junior College for two years and returned to the Wildcats for his last two seasons.  He is a sure gloved first baseman that earned All-NSIC Gold Glove honors last spring.  Not only does he do well on the baseball field, he also has above a 3.0 grade point average in the classroom.  He will hit in the middle of our order and continue to lead by example.

What makes you the person you are today? Everything I have been through, good or bad, in my life has taught me all that I know.  My mom and grandmother have taught me as well.
Coach Unger's comments: Kristen has been a very vocal leader for our squad.  She is a strong athlete and her work ethic is second to none.  Kristen is a very versatile player, but her main priorities will be to hold down first base or spark our offense as the designated player.
