2009 Harlon Hill Trophy Candidates Release
Wayne State College senior wide receiver Logan Masters has been selected as one of 24 candidates for the 2009 Harlon Hill Trophy as the NCAA Division II Football Player of the Year. The list of 24 candidates was announced today by the National Harlon Hill Award Committee. Joining Masters as one of six candidates from Super Region 3 are senior running back Joique Bell from Wayne State University in Michigan, senior quarterback Billy Cundiff of Ashland University, senior quarterback Brad Iciek of Grand Valley State in Michigan, junior running back Isaac Odim of Minnesota Duluth and senior quarterback David Pesek of Colorado School of Mines.
Masters, a 6-3, 185 pounder from Storm Lake, Iowa, has 66 catches for 831 yards and four touchdowns this season for the 7-3 Wildcats. He ranks third in the NSIC in both receptions and receiving yards while ranking 16th nationally in receptions per game at 6.60. Masters set a new NCAA Division II record last week by catching at least one pass in 45 consecutive games, breaking the old mark of 44 straight held by Mitch Allner of Morningside from 1996-99. In fact, Masters has caught at least two passes in every Wildcat game he has played in during his career (45).
Masters was a First Team Preseason All-American by Sporting News and Lindy's College Football Preview and was a Second Team Preseason All-American by D2Football.com. He became the first WSC receiver to record back-to-back 1,000 yard receiving seasons last year after hauling in 80 catches for 1,179 yards and six touchdowns to earn First Team All-NSIC and First Team Daktronics Super Region 3 honors.
The list of 24 candidates includes six players from each of Division II's four Super Regionals. Players are nominated and voted on by the sports information directors at the 148 NCAA Division II football playing institutions. The 24 candidates will be placed on regional ballots and the top two players from each of the four NCAA Division II regions will advance to the national ballot when regional voting concludes November 13.
Wayne State, 7-3 overall and 6-3 in the NSIC, hosts the University of Mary in the 21st annual Egg Bowl Game Saturday at Cunningham Field in Wayne with kickoff set for 1:00 p.m.
