Jennifer Hefner of Wayne State College has been named to the 29th annual AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association) All-American Team for NCAA Division II women's volleyball, earning Second Team All-American honors as voted on by NCAA Division II coaches from across the country. She is the second player in WSC volleyball history to earn All-American honors, joining Emily Schroeder who was Second Team AVCA and Daktronics All-American in both 2006 and 2007.
Hefner, a 6-1 junior middle blocker from Archer, Nebraska (Central City High School), earned First Team All-Northern Sun Conference honors for the second straight year this season, averaging a team-high 3.72 kills and 1.22 blocks per set while hitting .326 for the season. She led the NSIC this season in blocks, ranked second in points per set (4.66), third in kills per set and seventh in hitting percentage. Hefner also ranks 12th in NCAA Division II in blocks per set and was also named to the All-Tournament Team at the NCAA Division II Central Regional Nov. 19-21. She was also named the Sports Imports/AVCA Division II National Player of the Week on September 15th and helped Wayne State win a school record 15 consecutive matches from August 29-September 25th. Hefner finished the 2009 season with 483 kills, the ninth most in a single season by a Wildcat player and her career total of 1,178 ranks 11th all-time entering her senior season next year.
Hefner also excels in the classroom, being named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Volleyball Team for NCAA Division II with a 3.96 grade point average, becoming the first WSC volleyball player to every claim the prestigious honor. Other honors Hefner has earned this season include AVCA All-Central Region Team and Daktronics Second Team All-Central Region.
Wayne State College finished the 2009 season with a 29-8 record, advancing to the NCAA Division II national tournament for the fifth straight season. The Wildcats advanced to the Central Regional semi-finals before falling to two-time defending national champion Concordia-St. Paul. WSC was 16-4 in the Northern Sun Conference this season to tie for second in the conference.
