Former Wayne State College pitcher Nick Schumacher just completed a stellar 2009 season pitching for the Fort Wayne TinCaps of the Class A Midwest League, helping the team win the league title. Fort Wayne defeated the Burlington Bees 4-3 on September 17th to complete a three-game sweep and earn the franchise's first championship since becoming an affiliate of the San Diego Padres in 1999.
Schumacher, a 6-4, 210 pound right handed pitcher, posted a stellar 6-0 record for the TinCaps this season with a 1.11 ERA as a reliever. In 37 appearances, the Nebraska City native worked 56 2/3 innings, allowing just 47 hits and nine runs (seven earned) with 55 strikeouts and just 14 walks as a setup man in relief. Opponents hit just .226 off Schumacher this season.
Schumacher was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 28th round of the 2008 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. He was a standout pitcher for WSC from 2004-08, accumulating a career record of 30-9 to tie the school record for career wins held by Brady Borner. Schumacher was 13-2 in his senior season in 2008, earning All-American honors to go with Central Region and Northern Sun Conference Pitcher of the Year honors.
