Wayne State 9 Doane College 3
The Wayne State baseball team scored one run or more in the final six innings of the game to pull away from Doane College 9-3 in a non-conference baseball matchup Thursday night at Eaton Field in Wakefield, Nebraska. Junior Jarett Jackson was 2 for 3 on the night with three RBI's including a two run double in the fifth inning. Senior John Snyder earned his four straight win for the Wildcats pitching six innings and allowing one run. The win makes the Wildcats 15-13 overall and the loss drops the Tigers to 17-10 on the season.
Doane College got on the board in the bottom third inning when Luke Henderson hit an infield single to third allowing Dean Henson to score from third base to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. The Wildcats would tie the game in the top of the fourth inning when Jackson reached on an error by the third baseman and advanced to second on the throw. Mike Bisenius then hit a single to center field to score Jackson and tied the game at 1-1.
Wayne State would then take control of the game and scored at least one run in the final six innings. In the fifth inning, Jackson ripped a double into left center field scoring Nick Bidroski and Joe Wendte to give WSC a 3-1 lead. In the sixth inning the Wildcats expanded that lead to 5-1 thanks to a RBI single by Wendte and a double steal by Wendte and Brandon Polk scoring Polk from third base.
The Wildcats added another run in the seventh inning to expand their lead to 6-1 when Jackson scored on a double play ball that rung up Treye Hacker and Bisenius. Doane would score their second run of the game in the seventh inning when a sacrifice fly by Dean Henson scored Anthony Hincy. The Wildcats added two runs in the eighth and another in the ninth to take a 9-2 lead. The Tigers managed to put some pressure on in the ninth inning but only managed one run as the Wildcats won 9-3.
Jackson was 2 for 3 with three RBI's on the night. Wendte was 2 for 5 on the night with one RBI and two runs scored. Justin Beranek was 2 for 3 on the night with an RBI and Bidroski was 2 for 4 with a run scored to highlight Wayne State's 13-hit effort.
Snyder earned his fourth straight win to make him 4-3 on the season. He pitched six innings allowing one run on four hits. Reid Lancaster and Michael Frericks each pitched one inning allowing one run. Josh Nelsen pitched a solid ninth inning facing three batters, striking out two of them.
Wayne State will host Briar Cliff University in a non-conference nine-inning game next Tuesday (April 13) at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex in Wayne starting at 3:00 p.m.
