Wayne State College posted 14 blocks while forcing 27 attack errors on Western New Mexico as the 13
th ranked Wildcats recorded a 25-23, 25-15, 25-20 win over the Mustangs Saturday morning at the 2017 Courtyard and Residence Inn by Marriott Oredigger Classic in Golden, Colorado. WSC improved to 3-0 with the win while WNMU dropped to 0-3.
The first set saw the two teams exchange nine ties and five lead changes early in the match. WSC then built a 24-19 lead and held off a late Mustang rally to finish with the 25-23 set win. Junior
Maria Wortmann produced three kills and four blocks while freshman
Alyssa Ballenger had eight digs to lead WSC in the first set. As a team, WSC had seven blocks and forced 12 attack errors on WNMU.
WSC took control early in the second set, building an 8-2 lead, as the 'Cats never trailed for a 25-15 set win. Wortmann had a team-high four kills in the set while
Bree Ackermann accounted for two service aces.
The third set was a battle early with 11 ties and five lead changes until WSC scored the last five points of the set to break a 20-20 tie to finish with a 25-20 win to sweep the match in three sets. Sophomore
Katie Stephens had six kills and six digs for the 'Cats in the third set while Ballenger added 10 digs.
WSC finished the match hitting .147 with 36 kills on 129 attempts with 17 errors. Western New Mexico was held to a .041 attack percentage by the Wildcats with 33 kills and 27 errors on 145 attacks. WSC held a 72-66 edge in digs and outblocked the Mustangs 14-9.
Wortmann led WSC with 10 kills and eight blocks followed by Stephens with nine kills and 10 digs. Senior
Erin Gross added seven kills and five blocks while Ballenger finished with a team-high 22 digs.
Megan Gebhardt had 31 set assists and two service aces while
Haley Kauth finished with 11 digs.
Wayne State will play its final match in the 2017 Courtyard and Residence Inn by Marriott Oredigger Classic in Golden, Colorado, Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. against #15 Cal State – San Bernardino.
